Rick,

I was running about 50-60 watts from a Yaesu FT-990. Ant is an inverted "V" with the apex at 55 ft.
Iwas not copying KN4LF at 100% mainly because of static from a WX front that came thru my area about noon. It is close enough now to cause qrn on the lower bands. KN4LF is maybe 500-600 miles south of me and KF4MH is 250-300 miles south of me. I am located in Athens, AL or about 30 miles west of of Huntsville.

When you called CQ I copied you at 100%. I could hear the other guys but thought they were a bit lower than you were or I would not have answered you CQ. I could not see all of their signal in the waterfall.
I don't know anything about Pactor, I only had a couple of QSO's in Pactor-I several years ago.

I was able to auditorially hear both KN4LF and W4JSI (as I later
deduced) but was in the process of setting up the software and wiring
for a new computer and sound card. I could hear KN4LF, but could not see
his signal in the noise on the waterfall. After I finally got things set
up here in order to copy on screen I was able to get bits and pieces of
KN4LF and solid copy on W4JSI who had a -7 db at round 0223Z. Then I was
able to print more of KN4LF's tx, but it was difficult as the S/N ratio
showed -17 and I think that is around the minimum amount possible for
copying.

It would be interesting to see how well Pactor I, II, or III would print
under those condx. I suspect they would not print at all. However, this
was a 500 Hz wide very low speed mode at around 20 wpm and I personally
find it a bit too slow.

I would be interested in hearing what kind of rigs and power levels were
used. My station was heard by W4JSI but I don't know how well the S/N
ratio was. The rig here is a Ten Tec Pegasus and at that time was
running minimum power at 5 watts to a 40/160 trapped inverted vee dipole
with the apex only 30 feet or so high. The dipole is quite close to full
size since the 40 meter trap doesn't change the length by very much.
