This goes to part of my question and it is exciting
to envision "smart filters".
Of course a cell phone is only handling same modes
absent many of the huge variables present on HF Ham
bands so the challenge is considerably more complex.
I am certain that Hams and associated business interests

How do we prevent the inevitable conflict between the
wider and continuous-peak DV modes and other modes on
the bands?
Do we not need to segment digital and analog modes?
Also, is it possible to effectively filter out a known
digital mode? e.g. If I know that the signal QRMing

I certainly would encourage digital voice (DV)...and I don't feel that U.S. hams have anything to worry about using DV in the current voice bands.
While it is true that DV below the individual DV mode threshold causes the signal to &quo
There are voice encoding schemes that require much less. I've
experimented with this codec (for example), and found it quite good even
at 3k bits per second:

It's not lossless mind you, but quite intelegible and almost natural
sounding.

Tim's points are accurate when it comes to the current practical use of
digital voice on HF. I would mention that when the ARRL did a product
review on the new ICOM digital HT's, they were pretty honest with
comments on the robotic audio and if I recall from a later review, the
fact that the au

Doc,
They already have a compression protocol. The problem with voice is that
it is quite a large amount of data and requires a moderate bandwidth to
get that data through. SSB is pretty good from a spectrum conserving
point of view. We can not contravene the laws of physics, but we can at

hogging lots of spectrum?
From a non-engineer's perspective it sure would seem
that such is possible.
There is the much-delayed digital AM-BC tech
There are some who have experimented with the expensive adapters, and
some who have tried the voice mode of WinDRM. I am not sure how cool
this stuff is at this time. I have not had any luck finding much
activity, nor others who would be willing to try it out. When I have
asked about it, some h
