I seem to recall something to the effect that this is correct behavior
and that the old behavior on Linux was an incorrect implementation of
the USB specifications.

I don't know the answer to his, but as no one else has chimed in, I'll
offer a suggestion that you can look into:

If you store all the world's knowledge on the SD card, wouldn't you still have
to worry about losing it somewhere between the sofa cushions? ;-)

about hard drive problems. anyway on my old asus eeepc/ubuntu i would simply
mount --move the card to a folder on my home/barry directory and it would be
happy there even when i suspend resume.
