by coincidence I came across ProjectLibre [1], the successor of the Openproj
Project management software.
And I read that they are in discussion with LibreOffice on working together [2].
I am only an occasional user of LibreOffice (unfortunaltely) and am very rarely
using project
I am using project libre atm and its very easy to use, I have noticed one
issue with it which i need to try and resolve. I was wondering the same
thing ironically about integration of project libre into LO or an extension.

yes, but LibrePlan is a web application, not desktop software. And there is
also Gantt Project http://www.ganttproject.biz but it is in Java.
So as far as I have investigated it, for an desktop alternative to MS Project,
ProjectLibre is the project that would best fit to libreoffice...
