What do you think about putting a checkbox labeled "Show password"
or "Unmask" right next to or below the password field, like so:

Password: [____________]
                [ ] Show password

when you check the Show password checkbox, it unmasks the password
and shows what you typed in. Uncheck the box, the password is masked
again. This might eliminate the need for the Confirm password field. 
Mac OS uses this approach in the system preferences, I believe.

Another idea is to show the password as the user types it, and put a
timer on it, so when they pause for, say 1 second, it then masks the
password. I can see there could be some privacy concerns with this,
but might be worth user testing it. :)
