Jennifer,

There's a big difference between company goals and user goals! Perhaps you could make the distinction in terms of helping the user solve a problem (user centric) vs telling the user what the problem/solution is (company centric). Nav that is user centric would use labels and content sections pitched to address the interests, concerns, questions, etc that a user may have in mind. Company centric nav, on the other hand, would probably describe product, services, solutions.

I do think that both can work. Users are familiar with sites that tell the company story, problems solved by the company, and solutions offered. In fact you can do that and then use supplemental nav and sidebar content to offer walk throughs or nav to sections that address user needs.
