So this is why I used "dar". Keep a local metadata copy and I can run
differential backups against the metadata to upload as a tarball (um,
darball) without having to keep the data local too.

One must also note what one signed up for, if one didn't sign-up for

OP Update: All fixed!
The poor Classic has been in hibernation for months - would not even
respond to unplugging the power and connecting again. I took a chance
and ordered a new power adapter (wall wart) for the misbehaving Classic:
