You could have it set to switch to the Now Playing screen when there is
something playing ... and screen off when it is not.

Use SDT on the Touch or Pi. Then you can create a screen you like with
CustomClockHelper easely.

No, I wasn't actually doing anything, just listening to music and
watching the temp graph (like you do :)).

Why not RPi/7" screen with pCP and jivelite, that's what I use.
I have it on my desk to see what's playing on my main system.

The easiest way is probably to simply use a Squeezebox Touch to control
your Transporter.
