not sure where the
start icon should land. It's not on the dock, not on the desktop, but
appears in perferences and that doesn't seem correct. I can start it
but it doesn't seem correct. More later.

Download of 6.5.5 just worked. Took less than two minutes. Linksys
wirelesss G router, 1tb linksys NAS.
Did enable UnP on NAS as well as TwonkyVision. Unclear as yet if
either helped.

i tried to install slimserver 6.5+ several times on a new IMAC to no
avail; i found this instruction and just for the heck of it decided to
install firefox first. slimserver installed and ran, including
prompting me to approve the firewall changes, when I ran mozilla.
