There were two causes on my machine for the no album no artist problem under
6.5.0
1) Cover art embedded in the album. I went through the files with iTunes
and deleted the cover art and all the tracks but one were put back in the
database.
2) The track title was too long on the last tr
I'd go for smart playlists. This would address my year limiting requirement
(e.g. for random 80's or 90's music listening).

"Multiple Items in Tags" parameter to say "/" and put several album names in
one album name field. The only (big) problem that I can see is that, unless
you are lucky, the track number will be wrong for all but one of the albums.
