I'm busily employed (also in the software business) and whatever free time I
have currently goes to music. But if somebody started up a, uh, startup
building a squeezebox replacement, I would be seriously tempted to join.

I've got a Squeezebox Classic that won't power on.
At first it was intermittently failing to respond to the remote.
Then it just died. Checked the PSU with voltmeter: 5V.
Removed WiFi card: did not help.
When I plug in the squeezebox, I can see a flashing red LED near the optical
output.
