Of course that makes sense:
Symbolic links are only going to work in a linux filesystem.
The external drive is vfat.

If you are using Linux, try MP3Diags.
It can scan and identify many errors.
Offers many options to try and repair MP3 files.

MP3Diags does this sort of stuff and fixes other MP3 issues.
Works sweet on ubuntu linux but there is a windows version as well i
think.
