First thing to do is go to the screen that shows scanning progress. It's
the last tab under settings (sorry, can't remember exactly what it's
called.) You'll see two links for logs, one for the system itself and
one for the scanning process. Look at the last 50-100 entries in these
logs. I don't have anything specific to tell you, just that you should
look for errors or unusual things like the scanner throwing odd errors.

Another thing to check is to see if the built-in media scanners are
competing for resources (resources widget in the DSM OS, look at
processes and the CPU time consumed.) If you don't use any other
protocol for music (DLNA, Firefly, etc.) then it's best to go in and
disable those. Uninstall any unused packages through package manager.
You'll need to go into the command line to disable the media scanners, I
can point you to relevant information (or just google it) if you want.

If you want to post a portion of the scan log, maybe someone can offer
some insight into what's going on. That being said, the scan process on
a Synology box is veeeeeery slow. If you have more than a few 1000s of
songs, you can easily tie up your NAS for days, especially if it's doing
other things like indexing photos or music with the built-in scanners.
If you have one of the lower models (111, 110, 109, a -J model, etc)
then you're taking a double hit with the slow processor and small RAM.
