I also have a p4 1.5 + 1GB RAM running Ubuntu server 7.04.
I think I'll use this to run SlimServer on then and keep the Mac for
other chores.
I have a new MacBook pro, so the old G4 sits idle a lot of the time.

You can run SS on some pretty low-powered machines as long as they are
dedicated to the task. And you don't use them for ripping.
My SS box is an 800Mhz VIA EDEN Nano processor with 256MB memory and no
disk running SlimCD (Damn Small Linux). All the music is on network
storage. Streams to a pair

That's serious overkill, in fact. I ran Slimserver on an old 700 MHz
G3 with 1 G of RAM under OS X 10.3.9 up until a few weeks ago when
the power supply went bad.
