I have a lot of songs that are not actually part of an album - EPs,
singles, session tracks, freebies from band's sites, etc - so they have
a blank album tag. Squeezebox server doesn't seem to handle this very
well!
When browsing by artist (mostly with iPeng these days) I then get a 'No
Album'
No, this is normal. I just try not to leave the album field blank.

I am bumping an old thread since I have the exact same problem and have
not found a solution in the SC settings.
For tracks that don't belong to an album I would expect them to show up
as No Album by Artist A when browsing artists. Instead of No Album
by Artist A, Artist B, Artist C etc, i.e.
Dear all,
I maintain my Squeezecenter 7.2.1 (former SlimServer 6.5.4) Music
Library with iTunes 7.7.0.43 / 8.0.1.11
After upgrading to Squeezecenter I encountered several missing albums.
I found the songs in an album named no album (german: kein Album).
I can not find any reason for this
Unexpected results following the rescan though!
Even though tracks are tagged with same 'album' tag they still show up
as seperate albums in Slimserver. It seems it splits them up if they
are in different sub-folders - which most of them are.
I was hoping for just one folder of non-album tracks

I'll try that.
Should I give them all the same discnumber or a different one for each
folder?

Different. This feature is usualy used for multi CD albums (like the
greates hits and similar), but I don't see why it wouldn't work
otherwise.
And, BTW, the place to

Do you know how I can automate retagging to the above format?
I use MP3Tag for normal tagging but can't think how to do it using
that!
MP3Tag is a good tool for the job.

I've got hundereds of tracks that do not have an album tag (live songs,
downloaded freebies, singles etc.) as they don't actually come from any
album.
When browsing by artist these all show up as No album by a, b, c, d,
etc. which is now quite a long list!
Is there a way round this?

I've got an ever growing album called Singles Gathered to which such
tracks are assigned. Makes for an interesting random play.
