If you try the random mix option that comes with squeezecenter, you can
also select by genre. I don't know about the dynamic playlist plugin,
but the random mix option with add songs 10 at a time, and remove
played ones, thus keeping the playlist short.
Maybe this will speed things up for you.

When I press play on a Genre (with many songs) the whole interface\etc
slows to a crawl. I usually now press & hold play and then select the
dynamic playlist (from that plugin) which does the "random songs in
genre".
