If only it was that simple.
I have forced my slimserver back to the default skin but now it just
shuts itself down every 10-15 minutes, requiring a manual restart from
system preferences.

I had a similar problem. It seems that I was using a skin that no longer
exists. I went to the pref file and changed the skin variable to
Default. (I do not remember the exact names, etc. but the variable is
very near the end of the file.) I restarted SlimServer and everything
was fine. Good luck!
OS and browser version would probably be a help :)
