As I it understand it, this is a known bug and has been sorted out in
later releases. You could always try v7 beta.

I've just re-installed 6.5.4 on a new computer (XP Home). After the
installation the icon was showing in the notification area. However,
after rebooting it no longer shows. Slimserver starts automatically and
Slimtray is in the Startup group - it is actually showing as running.
