Is it possible to get the Transporter display to show bit depth and
frequency, ie. 16/44 or 24/96? Maybe a plugin if not natively?

Maybe the 'Music Information Screen' (MusicInfoSCR) plugin? To install
it, go to Settings Plugins Recommended 3rd Party Plugins.

Although it'll make things look better, the MusicInfoScreen plugin isn't
mandatory.
All you need is to define a new title format from the web UI (Settings
Interface), calling the SAMPLESIZE (bit depth) and SAMPLERATE
(frequency) keywords.
Something like this, for example:
TITLE
Very cool. Works a charm.
I'll take a look at the plugin too, to see if it offers any more
elegant design options. But the basic tags SAMPLESIZE/SAMPLERATE work
fine too, very straightforward.

MusicInfoScreen will let you design a custom screensaver.
That's how I'm using it, along with TitleSwitcher, for example, to
extend the informations shown on the left display
