I went with a refurbished Galaxy Tab P1000 (7") in the end. It's not here yet so will test it in the next couple of days. I hope it will be more than a glorified remote. I have ordered an HDMI dock as well so that I can stream to the TV (perhaps) and it'll get good use for sofa-browsing I expect.

I have a rooted nook color running cyanogenmod 7.1 that fits the bill nicely. Ithanks to bluegaspode, it can also be a squeeze device itself, however the speaker in the nook is amemic at best. A 7" android tablet at $200 with decent, loud stereo speakers and a kickstand would be a geeat frontend
