Just tested the new iTunes Plus. Bought the new Fountains of Wayne (the
full album price is the same as the old iTunes copy-protected version).
New DRM-free iTunes Plus version loaded and played through SlimServer

Personally, I will only buy music online if it is available in flac
format. There's not much out there unfortunately. I did find
http://www.bleep.com, a division of warp records I think. They have a
small handful of titles available in flac.

I burn them to CD, and then use jriver Mediacenter to covert them to
APE format (the same as my other music ).

Previously I bought Dub Side of the Moon directly from the Easy Star
Allstars, also drm-free flac, and tagged too.

I don't buy online music.
Don't like DRM, and more importantly I don't like the poor encodings of
many online services.
Whilst CD isn't the best quality, it is however generally better than a
lot of online music. Sadly the assumption is most people don't care
about quality and only want portabil
Try the emusic subscribers station on lastfm:

A lot of what it plays will be available on emusic.
There is also the emusic/pandora mash-up (for those lucky sods who can

If you're happy to dig around stuff you haven't heard before,
http://www.resonancestore.com has some interesting bits and pieces. I
recently found http://www.zunior.com too, though I haven't looked too
closely at this. Both non-DRMy with some albums available in FLAC.

I usually listen to samples on Amazon, but buy through CD Universe, as
they deliver far quicker than Amazon (I had seen an album I liked in
stock at Amazon, yet their estimated delivery time was 8 weeks?) and
for slightly less. I tend not to buy music files as they are generally
lossy, and I still

I've bought mainly from iTunes but the DRM is a real pain as tracks have
to be burned to CD before they can be converted. A further issue with
iTunes is that the output signal is really low and I always have to rip
to wav and amplify in Audacity before ripping to mp3 and that's quite a

I try to buy CD's first and foremost to rip them to FLAC, but in a pinch
I'll order from iTunes and then scrub the file of their DRM infection
with QTFairUse so I can listen to them on my Squeezebox.
Now, if only QTFairUse worked with video files and I'd be a happy
camper! ;-P

Count me in as another happy eMusic customer. First subscribed when it
was unlimited. Then they switched their model, and I still stayed on.
Eventually I did get "download fatigue". You have X downloads per
month, and if you don't use them, you loose them. After a while it
started taking long

I like their attitude as well, you don't actually buy as much as donate
so you can choose the amount. And they are quite happy for you to
distribute to upto 3 friends.
RIAA anyone!!?!

I buy my music online. Typically Amazon. First I listen to samples then
I have them send me the CD. Having bought digitally in the past leads
to disappointment. You don't have the CD liner, lyrics, or hardcopy to
encode any way you like.

You do need hours of spare time for emusic, so you can listen to all the
artists you've never heard of. It isn't really compatible with having
children!

eMusic here. I have been using eMusic ever since they charged $9.99 for
unlimited downloads of 128kbps MP3.
They are charging monthly fees for limited downloads, but the encoding
is now 192kbps VBR.
If your musical taste is non mainstream, eMusic can be a trasure
trough.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
I looked at eMusic the other week and they didn't really have any music
I liked.
Interesting that Amazon are going to do one - it would be good if it
was as big as iTunes but without the DRM problems and at reasonable
prices.
Thanks

Hi,
I've not bought much electronic music as I dont think the iTunes prices
are cheap enough not to have a physical CD so i've only got the odd
track here and there.
However, now I have Slingbox too and it wont play iTunes purchased
music I was wondering whether there were any other sites which
