You need to port-forward 9000 and 3483, although
that's inherently insecure. What do you mean by
you "opened" ports 9000 and 3483?
SSH is secure but can be complicated to set up.

I haven't received my SB3 yet (will collect it tomorrow), but I've
prepared everything. Slimserver installed, Windows XP firewall opened
up (by the Slimserver installation), although I actually thought I had
deactivated the darn thing
