It's easier than I thought, and discovered by accident.
Clicked on the volume in mediamonkey and it changed to edit mode (if you
open the edit dialogue, you can't change the levels)

Adjusted it way down, then up, reloaded in LMS, could see the volume

Thanks all, very helpful.
I would still have to apply the step to files already ripped. 20,000+
files... probably not going to put them all through DBPA again :p
I'll set it to write going forward, and test the existing ones on LMS.

That's what I was asking, will they work. I can obviously do a test,
however I thought it might be documented somewhere more up to date than
the original slim page.
I also don't really want to add another step in the process. Rip
Foobar and dBpoweramp are great if you're on Windows.
If you're on Linux (or happy to use the Linux subsystem on Windows) and
your collection includes a fair amount of classical music, I'd recommend
loudgain, which implements the original EBU R128 specification of -23
LUFS.

Another vote for metaflac. It's the final stage of my ripping process.

yes (this is what foobar2000 does and dbpoweramp as well by default).
LUFS is -18 in both by default (and what I use). I too use both
foobar2000 and dbpa.

If I rip a CD I use dbPoweramp to Rio it and set replaygain at the
encoding to FLAC stage.
If I record an LP to FLAC Ill run it through Foobar2000 to add the
replaygain
Iirc they are from the same software house so probably identical code

Probably best to use EBU R128 in the replaygain settings as well.

You should be writing both "Track Gain" and "Album Gain" values as
described above. The better setting is "Settings" > "Player" > "Audio"

Agree on Foobar.
Copied and edited from another thread:
How do you apply Track AND Album tags using Foobar? Which tag would
smart gain read in a multi album playlist?
Foobar 2000 > ReplayGain -> Scan as albums (by tags). It takes ~10
seconds per album on my PC.
In a multi album playlist smart

I use dbPoweramp because I already have it, but Foobar2000 works fine
and doesn't cost anything.

Can anyone recommend an accurate replay gain utility? Maybe I'm not
using the correct settings, what are the best settings to use? I have
been using beaTunes for a while but I find the results less than
satisfactory. When I turn on replay gain for tracks (which is what I
