I first installed from the RPM, then deleted the install and installed from the tar ball. It's generally running automatically from init.d, but I've also run it using ./slimserver, as root.

Come on. If this is a permissions issue, someone knows what's going on.
I've installed 6.5 before and not had this issue. Anyone one? Bueller?

install the tarball then there is nothing else setu

its usually in /tmp
Not a great place for it, we know.
There is a startup parameter that tells it where to
place the log.
