I'm a total noob, but I was able to get a basic Django app (Postgresql as DB) running on DigitalOcean without much trouble. It wasn't *easy--*in fact, I was ready to throw my computer out the window a few times--but I'm happy that I now have that skill.
DigitalOcean also has a great interface and very reasonable pricing.
