icon, hide its main window on startup and autoconnect if a connection

The Tor Browser Bundle plays fine with LetsEncrypt. It uses Fire
Sounds like a caching hangover to me.
Why not use a browser that *does* work until TTL kicks in?
I've had excellent luck with elinks when other browsers can't see the
new stuff.
