I'm trying to convert my valid docbook xml file :
(java com.jclark.xml.apps.Time book.xml reports no errors)
but
java com.jclark.xsl.sax.Driver book.xml ../docbook-xsl-1.50.0/fo/docbook.xsl
book.fo
returns:
file:.../docbook-xsl-1.50.0/common/common.xsl:983: no such function:
The XT processor does not yet support the key function. You might try saxon
(available at http://saxon.sourceforge.net/#F6.5.1) -- I have had the best
results using this processor.

Probably your best option is to override the template with
mode=chunk-filename in 'chunk.xsl' and change these lines:
xsl:variable name=dir
xsl:call-template name=dbhtml-dir/
/xsl:variable
to these:
xsl:variable name=dir
xsl:texthttp://myserver/path/dir//xsl:text
/xsl:variable

has a duplicate ID! FOP reports
The id toc...N46 already exists in this document
and the pdf-file is broken.
I am using stylesheets v. 1.50.0. Is it a stylesheet-bug?

No. Saxon 7 is experimental implementation of XSLT 2.0.
