Hmm..
I also get this problem. However, I am using Cocoon to process the XML. Cocoon uses FOP, and includes jimi.
So I am a little puzzled...

system for books on the Internet. DocBooks of course and the thesis
itself is written in DocBook, too.

I also had this problem initially when using FOP. However FOP gave me
an error stating it needed Jimi to process the images. I installed
Jimi and added it to my classpath and FOP has rendered images
correctly since then.
