It’s sad that this report was misfiled (to the wrong package, that is),
so it went unnoticed for so long.
This is not a bug specific to the Ubuntu fonts. fontconfig does not deal
well with multiple weights.
It’s already filed in the upstream tracker.

Hi Lukas, any chance that you can address the questions in comment #14?
Also, language-selector in Trusty has been updated now, so if you
haven't already done so, you should downgrade language-selector-common
to version 0.129.2 so you are not shut out from possible future updates.

I went into Synaptic and completely removed the package, then did an
update and re-installed it, it worked, cured the problem

to the user in the language their browser asks for, if such language is
available. Please check your regional and language settings.
I also looked at the pages cached at google, and for me they were in US-
English.

This happens every time I try to udate using the software updater, I've
tried to clean it using apt-get cle3an and automremove, but it does'nt
work.
I now generally untick it under the software updater so that the rest of
the updates can work without a problem
