Dovecot Separator change

Hi community, actually we are using dovecot 2.2.27 without shares mailboxes. Now we would like to implement it. So the problem is that our separator is dot „.“ and the username like „firstname.surname“. That’s doesn’t works with shared mailboxes. Are there a migration guide for changing „.“
