For a 8 user environment, it should be enough to do this via crontab,
every some minutes.

try updating to Dovecot v2.3.20 // I had the same in earlier versions,
but it doesn't happen any longer now.
Increasing the limit didn't help me at that time, even the 0 didn't help.
