It turned out to be a recent change in Dovecot's mech-gssapi.c to do
with checking for NULs in usernames: everything worked fine when I
disabled that test.
What
with Heimdal 0.6.3, 1.0.1 and 1.2.1 and
all gave the same result. Is it possible that the data_has_nuls test
doesn't work as intended or that it only works with MIT Kerberos?
Thank you.

There's our problem. There's only one location
/dovecot-1.1-managesieve/rev/8dc698b544ce fixed

Thank you Timo and Stephan! That was it! I have applied the latest
patches to cmd-getscript.c in dovecot-managesieve 0.10.6, rebuilt, and I
can once again retrieve larger scripts from the server.

There's our problem. There's only one location in the sources where this
most informative error can occur :) . Apparently, Timo

OK Getscript completed.
Is there a way to enable more detailed debug logging on the server?
