You said you're using Dovecot v1.1.16. That error message exists only
in Dovecot v1.0. So your upgrade didn't work.

Today I upgraded to version 1.1.16 of Dovecot (and Sieve), because I
wanted to use mailbox quotas. I tried using the instructions on

There's no such error string in Dovecot. Do you maybe mean Unknown
parameter?
Set auth_debug=yes and mail_debug=yes and show me what it logs when
