Is it possible to compress incoming mails delivered via dovecots LDA
when using
dovecot --version
1.2.9
or do i have to compress them via cron?

There is a zlib plugin for Dovecot 1.x you could use. See

No, the zlib plugin is only for reading compressed messages/mailboxes.
You have to compress them manually.
