Thanks for the preferences.  I figured out the problem:
When I set "displayhelp=false" the field starts out blank.
After I click in the toolbar and click away the clock
appears.  Reloading the toolbar preferences sets it to blank
again until the toolbar gets and loses focus.

Setting "displayhelp=true" and "helptime=0" causes the time
to appear right away, as I wanted.
