Hi folks,
I am in the need to change the output audio transistor 40310 in my
drake 2-C. Is there a modern equivalent of the 40310 so I can easily
replace it?

I just got a short note from Garey Barrell's daughter that he has been
hospitalized and it may be awhile before he is able to be back on the
lists. She didn't give much in the way of details, other than it was
due to complications from surgery.
I recall that Garey had a ticker operation a year
It is running on 12 volts, I would think almost any NPN silicon power
transistor with a TO-66 case would work, like a 2N3054 and I have a few if
needed.

Having last owned a tube rig 3 decades ago, I recently purchased a T-4X and an
R-4. Had expected to encounter some problems, didn't expect the swamp to
deepen so quickly. On 40M CW and LSB, rig tunes up fine, an output wattmeter
indicates 70 watts with 200mA plate current and a chirpy
I am trying to help another Drake fan, but need some of you fellows
experteeism:
He has hum in his early R-4A including with the AF gain turned to
minimum. He replaced the can-cap in it (this one is the 3-section
version, all 100 mfd) and the hum dropped dramatically.
Apparently there was
Tom,
Does he have a spare audio output tube he can sub in to make sure the tube
itself is not causing the hum?? I would try that first, then look at
coupling capacitors that he hasn't yet changed.

How much hum and via what output? If I use hi-fi headphones on my tube
gear, I can hear hum. OTOH it is not really noticeable with the speaker.
