I also cool my T4XC's with a 12 volt DC fan that I run on a
6 volt DC wall-wart. Turns 1/2 speed and cools the transmitter
just fine.

When I rebuild or upgrade power supplies for the L4, L4B, and L7, I have some
special fans that I use. A few years ago, after trial and error
experimentation, I found some muffin style fans rated for 220 vac BUT they
start reliably and run consistently and totally quiet on 110 vac. Some
Evan,
Would you share the make and model of the fans that work so well for you??
Sounds like something I need to do here.

Well, I'm not Evan, but I will share what I am doing with my L-4PS. The larger
the fan, the slower (and quieter)
Jim,
And fellow Drake enthusiasts, I will go downstairs later today and get the
model numbers of the fans that I use.
As a side note, I have a project in progress that will have L4/L4B/L7 power
supply fans internal to the supply, for convenience.
Quality is indeed important as you
I use 24V computer type fans run at 12V.

Fellow enthusiasts,
Here are the fan numbers that I have been using for cooling fans for the power
supplies for the linears, RF decks, and C line transmitter. They all start and
run reliably on 110 vac, as would be the case when putting two in series.
Can't hear them run.

Very cool discussion for Drake fans.. I glued a couple of very quiet Arctic F12
120mm together, wired in series to an old surplus wall wart and use them on top
of all my vintage valve equipment. They're cheap, quiet, have fluid dynamic
bearings for longevity and can be flipped over for suck or
Hi Doc -
I looked at the fans you referenced below. They mention PWM (Pulse
Width Modulation) which is a way to control fan speed by the 'duty
cycle' of the applied AC. It says there is a PWM 'amplifier' in the
fan, which should be silent, but I wonder if there are other associated
Shortly after my posting on the Arctic F series fan, Garey raised the issue of
PWM RFI. As it turns out, there are several models in the F series.. some with
and some without the WPM feature. (see

As an afterthought, I included an
