Hi Garey,
Thanks for the wonderful tips. I will let the list know what I find. I know
of a person who redesigned the TR-4 PTO circuit to get the better stability. I
do not know what effect it had on the linearity though. I will ask him whether
he is okay with sharing the information.

I put a really nice RV-4 on FleaBay yesterday. I bought it with a
TR-4 complete set. It tests out fine with the TR-4 but I am not going
to keep it. Very nice copper and good paint, speaker etc...all
cables. Started at $1 and no reserve ends on Sun...

First, that's a 2N3858 in the Buffer position, a 2N3904 will replace.
The 2N706 is still available from Mouser and others. Other transistors
'may' work, but 'may' also corrupt the linearity. I don't know.
I've been looking for a defunct PTO to conduct these sorts of

Hi Kihwal,
Don't toss that PTO out...!
I know Garey expressed interest some time ago in acquiring a "bad" one, so
that he might perform some "post mortem" work upon it for educational
sake...
As long as you have the PTO board in your hand, "jiggle" the different
components between your thumb & f
I am setting up a 2NT with a VFO. The easiest way to connect seems to
be to connect the output of the vfo to a crystal socket. I would like to
try as a plug an FT-243 crystal holder with the crystal removed and the
vfo output soldered to the two holder pins. Anybody willing to part

The PTO in my R-4A failed a few days ago. I replaced it with a spare I had, but
I still want to fix it as it has better linearity. In case the transistors are
bad, what are the proper substitutes? It has a 2N3058 and a 2N706.
