I assume you have performed an alignment per the
manual. If you have, you might try repeating it just to be certain.
The noise blanker will affect gain (if well aligned, it may actually increase
the gain a bit - if not, try taking it out of line). If you still have the
problem:

The little springs tend to slip a bit; you think
you are moving the drive shaft and slug, but you are only moving the
spring. Try a small, stongalligator clipinserted from the rear
of the receiver- this is much easier to adjust than pliers. Try to
clamp back on the shaft to prevent

I use my IC 756 as a cheapie spectrum analyzer on a regular basis. It has
proved to be reasonably reliable and accurate, using a piece of wire on a
coax center pin as a sniffer. It also works to accurately align local
oscillators, etc. I have never seen it introduce or display oddball,
to
be carefully maintained.
