Oops, sorry. V13 was the AVC amp, not audio. The diodes in
the 12AV6 weren't used.

Not quite... The two tubes dropped from the "early" R-4A
were V6, the 6GX6 Product Detector, and V13, the AM detector
and first audio amp. The VR tube stayed on until the
ke removed that in the later R4A
series, early R4A had the OB2 and 6GX6 product detector, but the 11 tube
