Does changing the agp mode help? Set radeon.agpmode=x where x=-1,1,2,4,8. -1
disables agp and uses the gpu's gart instead.

You could attach your driconf.
Then we could see if MLAA was enabled in mesa-8.0.4 or not.
P.S: Your Evergreen card uses the r600g (gallium) driver and not radeon
classic.
