there was one hang but on second try it worked like a charm and I managed
to play even when new textures needed memory :).

As I have said before, the fact that you have
what is called a Rage "Pro" has NO significance regarding the
perceived lack of support for your ATI.. Maybe this will be
convincing. It is taken from /var/log/XFree86.0.log on a system
in which DRI acceleration is working just fine.
