The problem identified by "DRM+ATI-Radeon-Mobility" appeared already
with kernel 2.4.23-pre8
Freezing takes place when function, gl_init_all_x86_transform_asm
called from /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/radeon_dri.so
is to be executed (see eg., gdb tunnel )
