OK, I can now build & run i830_dri.so from the Mesa tree using 'make linux-dri'.

It's a bit hacked together, but people who are interested should cast their eyes over:

        configs/linux-dri
        src/mesa/drivers/dri/Makefile.template
        src/mesa/drivers/dri/dri_client/*
        src/mesa/drivers/dri/i830/Makefile

There's not a lot to it, though there is something odd still going on with xf86drm.h and i830_dri.h
