Hah clever!  I wanted to suggest this as possible workaround, but
thought it was too much hassle.  So, in short:
* install latest snapshot from dri.sf.net
* get dri-resume snapshot from http://cpbotha.net/dri_resume.html and  
  extract libxaa.a from it
* copy libxaa.a into /usr/X11R6/lib/modules

This is of course unless you just use my snapshot which is identical to
DRI CVS except that it has some extra code for suspending/resuming that
gets activated during switchVTs.
