Gamma correction works (for me at least) in 24bit mode only

I am using savage driver from savage-2 cvs but it seems the switch "Gamma x y
z" in XF86Config Monitor section doesn't make anything.
In Xfree log, we can see parameters are used, but visually there is no
difference between gamma 1.0 1.0 1.0 and gamma 0.5 0.5 0.5
