That fixes the last but one scene in amoeba mostly and the (rare)
flickering vertices in tuxracer completely, great!

However, there are still similar effects, e.g. in quakeforge and
vegastrike, so I suspect there are still similar problems elsewhere.
Sticking assertions in more critical places might be a good idea?
