All,

As announced in yesterday's "DSpace 7 Q&A Webinar", the 7.4 release is planned
for October (tentatively Oct 10). For this release, the DSpace 7 Working Group
will be concentrating on maintenance tasks (bug fixes, usability/accessibility
improvements, and similar). However, we will accept donations of new features
(and plan to accept a few features which barely missed the 7.3 release in June).

If you'd like to help with 7.4, there are a few ways to do so:

  1. Donate a new feature to 7.4. If you have started or plan to start
building a new feature which you'd like to give back to DSpace for the 7.4
release, please let me know by August 1. Your code need not be ready to review
by that date, but the DSpace 7 Working
Group<https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+7+Working+Group> must be
informed of your planned contribution to 7.4 by Aug 1. This will allow us to
ensure we have reviewers/testers available to help get your feature into 7.4
(and if we do not, we can work with you on an alternative release plan)
  2. Help report bugs you are seeing in any 7.x release. As noted, for 7.4,
the DSpace 7 Working Group is planning to squash as many bugs, and other issues
as possible. If you know if issues that have not yet been reported in our
ticketing system, please report them as soon as reasonably possible. That way
we can work to get them fixed in 7.4!
     * Report User Interface bugs to
https://github.com/DSpace/dspace-angular/issues (or report a bug here if you
just don't know if it's in the user interface or backend)
     *   Report backend/data bugs to https://github.com/DSpace/dspace/issues
     * When reporting a bug, we ask that you try to provide us with a
step-by-step process to reproduce it. That makes it much easier for us to
identify it and ensure it gets fixed.
  3. Help us fix small bugs. If you are a developer (or have developers on
staff), consider making your first (or next) code contribution to DSpace 7.
Since this is a maintenance-heavy release, we'll be concentrating on fixing
bugs, usability, or accessibility issues. A number of these issues are labeled
as "good first issue" in GitHub -- these are issues we've verified are
smaller/easier to tackle. If you'd like to claim one, get in touch (add a
comment in GitHub, or send me a message in Slack/email). The more developers we
have tackling issues, the more we can get done!
     * Issues in the Angular UI labeled "good first issue":
https://github.com/DSpace/dspace-angular/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3A%22good+first+issue%22
     * Issues on the Java backend labeled "good first issue":
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aopen+label%3A%22good+first+issue%22

Finally, for anyone interested in contributing to a future release, we plan to
release a new version of 7.x every 4 months. Some releases will be
feature-heavy while others may be maintenance-heavy. Here's the tentative
upcoming schedule:

  *   7.4 is due Oct 2022
  *   7.5 is due Feb 2023
  *   7.6 is due June 2023

If you have any questions, feel free to get in touch and/or join a future
DSpace 7 Working
Group<https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+7+Working+Group> meeting.
