These queries *are* cached as long as you have "webui.strengths.cache=true"
set in your dspace.cfg file. So, that might be a first step here is to
ensure you are caching these item counts.
Offhand, I'm not sure myself why the performance would be significantly

The "Top Country Views" and "Top City Views" only show a subset of the
Countries and Cities that had Views. They are meant to represent the top
10 Countries/Cities that accessed this Item. So, they will almost never
total up to the same value as "Total Visits".

This error seems to be a Tomcat specific error, and may not have to do with
DSpace itself (I don't see anything DSpace specific in those logs you sent
along). So, you may want to look more closely at the Tomcat error logs and
see if it's reporting additional errors there.
