The emails kept coming from DSpace while Tomcat was turned off because they
were queued up in our mail server. Once we cleared the cache on that end,
the emails ceased.
We speculate that search engines are traversing our site, causing the
continuous requests to DSpace.

I can only report experiences from our local test cases. We tested the
import in our cluster on two DSpace nodes and ran simultaneously two
imports with 600 records on each node. This worked fine, but I can't say
more.

the IP:port that your handle service is configured for. Could be TCP ports
2641 or 8000, or UDP port 2641. Check on Linux with:
